Automatic transmission is fine for cruising the open world or learning the map, but competitive solo time trials and multiplayer races reward riders who manage gears deliberately.

The game mirrors real motorcycle physics more closely than arcade racers. Upshifting too early bleeds speed on straights; downshifting too late or not at all makes corner exits feel heavy and unresponsive. Once you understand when to change gears, every bike in the roster of 158 unlockable motorcycles becomes more predictable. Toggle Transmission with M

Press M on PC to switch between automatic and manual transmission modes. You will feel the difference immediately: in manual mode, the bike no longer changes gears for you when RPM climbs. Mobile players should check the on-screen control layout in the controls overview, as transmission toggles may appear in the advanced menu depending on your device layout.

Use automatic mode while you are learning a new track or testing a freshly purchased bike from the dealership. Switch to manual once you know where the straights and braking zones are. Many experienced players toggle back to automatic only during long free-roam sessions or when farming driving speed cash along highways where constant shifting adds little value.

If shifting feels unresponsive after toggling manual mode, confirm you are not still holding the handbrake or riding with traction control settings that fight aggressive throttle inputs. Transmission mode persists for your current session but it is worth re-checking after respawning at a checkpoint or teleporting to a race zone.

Shifting with Q and E

Q downshifts one gear; E upshifts one gear. The inputs are placed beside WASD movement so you can change gears without moving your left hand far from steering. Tap E as RPM rises near the redline on straights, and tap Q before entering slow corners so you exit with usable torque. Do not spam shifts: each gear change takes a fraction of a second and mistimed inputs can unsettle the bike mid-turn.

Listen to engine pitch as a free tachometer. When the note goes flat on acceleration, you are due for an upshift. When the bike bogs pulling out of a hairpin, drop one more gear before applying throttle. Pair downshifts with brake pressure so you arrive at the apex in second or third rather than fourth, a common mistake on the steep hills that define the TR Legacy open world.

Practice the Q and E rhythm on Race Zone straights before entering multiplayer lobbies. Solo time trials are the safest laboratory because there is no pressure from other riders and you can repeat the same segment until shifts become muscle memory. Start with one long straight, then add a braking zone, then chain two corners together.

Quickshifter Upgrade and When to Buy It

The quickshifter is a performance upgrade that reduces shift delay, letting you upshift under partial throttle with less momentum loss. It is especially valuable for drag-style launches and short straights between corners where every millisecond counts. You do not need the quickshifter to learn manual shifting. Treat it as a mid-game investment after horsepower, brakes, and tyre grip levels are reasonably balanced. For pure straight-line testing, however, quickshifter plus higher horsepower transforms how aggressively you can stay on throttle while clicking through gears.

Budget riders can defer the quickshifter until they regularly place in multiplayer races where shift delay actually costs positions. If you mostly free-roam or run solo laps for lap rewards, standard manual shifting is sufficient and the RM is better spent on brake power for the map's elevation changes.

Practice Drills on Straights and Race Zones

Find a long straight with no intersecting traffic, such as the approach to Race Zone 1 or an open highway segment away from the dealership cluster. Ride in manual mode from a standstill: launch in first, shift to second at roughly half the redline, then third, fourth, and fifth in steady intervals. Repeat until you can reach top gear without looking at UI prompts.

Add a braking marker at the end of the straight. Downshift sequentially with Q while braking, matching one gear reduction per brake pulse. The goal is to enter the corner in the lowest stable gear without locking the rear wheel. TR Legacy's steep hills punish riders who carry high gears into downhill hairpins, so include at least one elevation change in your practice route.

When drills feel consistent, move to timed solo races across all seven race zones. Each zone emphasizes different corner types, so shifting habits that work on a flat circuit may need adjustment on hilly segments. Teleport between zones from the map menu to avoid long rides between practice areas. Consistency beats raw speed while learning; a clean shift sequence with moderate lap times beats messy fast laps.
